Gazab Information

At 179 Essex St in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Gazab is a contemporary Indian restaurant built around bold spices, shareable plates, regional influences, and playful updates to familiar dishes. The kitchen describes its food as scratch-made, and the current menu ranges from street-food-inspired bites to biryani, paneer, curries, and tandoori preparations. Gazab NYC works especially well for diners who want Indian food with more creative presentation than a standard curry-house experience, without turning dinner into a formal special-occasion production.

The dining room leans casual and lively rather than quiet or dressy, making it comfortable for dates, dinners with friends, and small groups. Current posted hours have Gazab closed Monday, open 5–10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and serving both lunch and dinner Friday through Sunday, with later closing at 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Reservations and online ordering are available. The menu also clearly identifies vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free selections, useful for mixed-diet groups, while beer, wine, mango lassi, and Indian soft drinks provide several pairing options.

For a first visit, sharing a few contrasting dishes gives the best sense of the kitchen. Kolkata pani puri offers a bright, sweet-and-sour start, while the charcoal-smoked chicken tikka brings deeper spice and smoky flavor. Vegetarians have substantial choices such as methi palak paneer, made with house-prepared paneer, fenugreek, spinach, cumin, and fried garlic. For a main course, Hyderabadi chicken dum biryani combines basmati rice, saffron, whole spices, yogurt, and fried onion, while the Parsi lamb shank takes a richer route with tangy tomato gravy and crisp potato salli. Current pricing places most small plates in the mid-teens and many larger plates in roughly the low-to-upper $20s, before drinks, tax, and tip.

Customer feedback is generally strongest on flavor, friendly service, and dishes that feel distinctive without losing their Indian roots. Recent diners have praised the staff’s recommendations and well-judged spice levels, while broader feedback rates food and service particularly well. The atmosphere is described as energetic, with moderate noise rather than a hushed dining room. Not every experience is seamless: at least one recent diner reported a reservation problem on arrival, so confirming a busy-night booking directly may be sensible.

Gazab is best for casual date nights, group dinners, adventurous Indian-food fans, and diners who enjoy ordering several dishes to share. It may be less suitable for someone seeking very inexpensive takeout, a silent business dinner, or only familiar restaurant standards. First-timers should consider pairing pani puri or chicken tikka with a biryani or paneer dish and finishing with the gulab jamun crème brûlée,a well-rounded way to experience what makes Gazab more interesting than a routine curry stop.

What People's Say About Place

I had a fantastic dining experience at Gazab Indian Restaurant and was impressed from the moment the food arrived. The presentation of the pani puri was outstanding — creative, fun, and definitely a highlight that adds to the overall dining experience. It’s clear that a lot of thought goes into not just the flavor, but also the visual appeal of each dish. The ghosht was exceptionally good — tender, rich, and full of deep, layered spices that really stood out. You can tell the meat was slow-cooked to perfection. The dum biryani was another highlight, served with great aroma and authenticity, with each grain of rice perfectly cooked and full of flavor. It tasted just like a traditional biryani should, with the right balance of spices and perfectly cooked meat. To end the meal, I tried the gulab jamun, which was served hot and incredibly satisfying — soft, warm, and soaked in just the right amount of syrup. It was the perfect sweet finish. The ambience is cozy and welcoming, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a relaxed meal. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the staff were happy to explain the dishes and make recommendations. Overall, Gazab offers a great combination of authentic flavors, excellent presentation, and a comfortable dining atmosphere. A wonderful spot for anyone craving well-executed Indian cuisine.

Gazab is a fantastic spot with bold, flavorful food done right. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely a place worth visiting if you enjoy great taste and good vibes! The chicken tikka masala at Gazab was excellent — tender chicken in a rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced sauce. Full of flavor and absolutely satisfying. A must-try dish.. The samosa was also rich and full of flavor, crispy on the outside and delicious inside.

This is one of the most interesting and authentic Central North Indian dishes serving restaurant… we tried the recently added thecha paneer which was perfectly spiced and flavorful… along with that the prawn ghee roast… the masala of the ghee roast was delicious and the most famous dish on the menu … lemon chicken curry and lauki kofta curry… it was flavorful and perfectly balanced … each bite feels so homely and warmth… the chefs really know what they are they cooking here.. the desert was equally amazing Crème brûlée with gulaab jamun.. the staff/servers are so hospitable and welcoming and generous… it’s a must go spot for a good Indian food. Looking forward to try their biryani and lamb curry…

This is a hidden gem, which I’m sure is a “where the locals eat” restaurant. I found it online when seeking a place near Mercury Lounge. Our whole experience was A+ from start to finish. I was able to get a same-day reservation. When I realized we were going to be late, I emailed on the reservation app and received an immediate and gracious response. I then called to get help related to the closest subway stop, and the person on the other end of the line at the restaurant was so helpful and patient. Truly eager to help me and assure me that our table would be waiting for us on our arrival. It was a freezing night, so arriving at this cozy, atmospheric spot was welcomed! The owner and servers were welcoming and warm, and every food choice we made was excellent. You can’t miss. As we prepared to leave and head to the live show nearby, I really felt like we had visited someone’s home in India for dinner because of how authentic the entire experience was. We will definitely seek to return to Gazab during a future visit to the City! Our suggestions as you order: Naan bread Cauliflower Rice with mushrooms Lemon chicken Mini Diet Coke in a bottle! Kingfisher beer

We ordered Hyderabadi chicken biriyani, goat karahi and the the chicken tikka. My favorite was the chicken tikka. It was super flavorful. The food was overall pretty spicy. Will definitely come back.

Food was excellent. Very good portion sizes and prices. I especially liked the lemon chicken and palak paneer. Check it out! Great customer service as well.

The host provided superior service, with no waiting time and a highly attentive demeanor. They responded to all our inquiries promptly. The culinary offerings were exceptional. We had no dissatisfaction whatsoever. Everything met our expectations. The paneer and garlic naan was certainly one of my favorite dishes there.
